Welcome to Portage, Indiana
Welcome to Portage, Indiana—a vibrant and growing community where business, recreation, and quality of life come together. Located in Northwest Indiana, Portage offers convenient access to Chicago while providing residents and visitors with beautiful natural spaces, a thriving business community, and a welcoming hometown atmosphere.
Just minutes from Lake Michigan and approximately a 40-minute drive from downtown Chicago, Portage offers the best of both worlds: easy access to the amenities and opportunities of a major metropolitan area while maintaining a strong sense of community. The South Shore Line also provides convenient rail access to Chicago and destinations throughout Northwest Indiana.
Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to explore in and around Portage. The community is home to Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk, part of Indiana Dunes National Park, where visitors can enjoy Lake Michigan beaches, hiking, fishing, picnicking, birdwatching, and spectacular sunsets. The Indiana Dunes region offers year-round opportunities to experience the area's unique natural beauty, from swimming and boating in the summer to hiking, wildlife viewing, and winter recreation.

Located along Central Avenue, Founders Square serves as a central gathering place in downtown Portage. The area features an entertainment pavilion, splash pad, green space, and a mix of commercial and residential development. Throughout the year, Founders Square hosts community events and activities that bring residents and visitors together, including markets, concerts, car shows, and other special events.

On the north side of the city, AmeriPlex at the Port is a 385-acre mixed-use business park strategically located near I-94, the Port of Indiana, rail transportation, and other major regional transportation routes.
